Meet John and Marilyn

Recently, Marilyn and John were talking to the staff about how amazing it is to live at Royal Brock Retirement Living. We decided to run an advertisement in the Brockville Recorder and Times.

Here’s their testimonial!

A special couple has found their perfect place at Royal Brock Retirement Living in Brockville, Ontario, here is their story.

Let us introduce to you, John and Marilyn. Marilyn Buffam is a retired medical secretary, from Perth, Ontario. Her partner, Dr. John Jackson is a retired Professor from Concordia University in Montreal. In 2014, Marilyn suffered a stroke, and then fell and broke her hip. She has since made a remarkable recovery, which is great news. However, these occurrences prompted the couple to begin their search for a retirement community that could specifically meet their needs. As John actively writes and travels often to Montreal, where he is a board member of the Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism and has published several books in the fields of Sociology and Communication, it was important to meet their requirement as an active couple.

John and Marilyn shared with us that no matter how many properties they visited, they could not find exactly what they were looking for in a retirement community. They were looking for a place to pursue their individual interests and to remain active within a community. They could still manage their home, and were healthy, that was not the issue. They were specifically looking to “Free up their time to pursue other interests”. Marilyn and John have always enjoyed the culture in Brockville; they love the Arts Centre, Aquatarium and the many shops and restaurants in the area. Marilyn does confess to being a “Shop-a-holic”, she also loves reading books and is a very active person. While on a visit to Brockville, a shopping trip, one might suppose, they noticed that the historical Royal Brock had been completely renovated and was now called Royal Brock Retirement Living, they decided to stop in and met with our Jenifer, our Director of Care. This was a sign, finally everything they were looking for was right before them. There is a library, a movie theatre, an exercise room, an art gallery, a salon, pub and tea Room.

This was it!!! Both Marilyn and John could visualize themselves living here. They felt that Jenifer was genuinely interested and excited about their plans to find the perfect residence that supports both retirement living and independence. The hunt was over, Marilyn and John had found their new home. The beautiful transformation of the Royal Brock struck them, “This was it”. John talked about how impressed he was by the restoration of the building. “It just felt so different from anything we had seen up until that point; we weren’t actively looking at this point.” John and Marilyn agree that the units are incredibly spacious; they put deposits down on two 2-bedroom units, side by side. John utilizes one for his office and workshop, as he is also an active carver and creates beautiful art work. John says he thinks of his units as his home, enough room for everything. He also thinks of Royal Brock as his neighborhood. A very special place to live.

Please share this story with anyone you think might be looking for a special place to retire and live an active life. We would be happy to give you a tour of our beautiful facility.
